 RAHU AND KETU

There are different names given to Rahu and Ketu like Nodes, Shadows, Head and Tail, Caput, Cauda etc. The Moon is a satellite of the earth revolving around it in an orbit inclined to that of the earth round the Sun at an angle of approximately 50. The Moon completes its orbit round the earth in about a month crossing the orbit of earth twice in the same period, once when it goes from south to north and at another time while traveling from north to south. The ascending point is called ‘Rahu’ and descending point ‘Ketu’. These have retrograde motion in the zodiac at the rate of 19020′ per year.

There is a fundamental difference between Rahu and Ketu and the other planets. The other planets are bodies of physical mass having form, shape, color, gravity, atmosphere, motion etc. On the other hand Rahu and Ketu are two imaginary points in the heavens without mass, shape or form. They are the points of intersection of the apparent path of the Sun with the path of Moon. It has been established beyond doubt that Rahu and Ketu influence an individual’s life, at times more than other planets. Since they are in exact opposition to each other, their effect should be considered simultaneously.

Rahu and Ketu give the effects of the lords of the signs they are in and also of those planets which are situated with them, not having much individual characteristics of their own. Rahu is known as Dragon’s head and Ketu as Dragon’s tail. Head is forward looking while the tail represents the past. The Rahu represents the qualities to be developed and work to be done during the present incarnation and Ketu denotes the qualities during past lives and these indicate attitudes that come naturally to the native. They are classified as Karmic planets.

According to Hindu astrology both Rahu and Ketu are malefic. Rahu is considered as ‘giver’ and Ketu the ‘taker’ and since giving and taking are results of former action, they may be considered as planets of ‘gains’ and losses’. Ketu is considered as a spiritual force causing salvation to human souls and Rahu is more earthly indicating mundane prosperity. The effects of the Nodes is not always evil, they are also productive and causing Raj yogas. By and large Nodes play a constructive role because after making the native pass through various difficult phases, they also enable him to progress spiritually. However, if the Nodes conjoin Mars or Saturn without any benefic aspect, life is marked by misery, struggle and misunderstanding throughout. Rahu is also considered a diplomat and Ketu a seer. Rahu and Ketu eclipse the Sun and Moon representing the soul and mind respectively. Hence they have a great influence on the soul’s liberation or rebirth. Rahu or Ketu within 2 degrees of the ascendant give an unusual type of personality and a very distinctive appearance.

Rahu and Ketu signify one born in low caste, dissatisfied, fond of travelling, telling lie, harsh in speech, involved in unnatural sex. They also indicate change of residence, ill health, dual marriage, serpents, mosquitoes, insects, spices, southwest direction etc. Part of the body represented by them are buttocks, intestinal tract. The diseases indicated by them are hiccups, insanity, intestinal problems, ulcer, gastric problems etc. The products represented by them are meat, wine, eggs, radish, coconut, sacrifice of animal’s etc.

Rahu has the properties of Saturn whereas ketu has the influence of Mars. Rahu is feminine. Its gem is Agate or Lapis lazuli. Rahu is said to resemble Saturn. Rahu governs paternal grandfather and maternal grandmother. Ketu is eunuch. Its gem is turquoise. Ketu is said to be conducive to liberation. Ketu is said to be similar to Mars in giving effects. Ketu rules maternal grandfather and paternal grandmother. Rahu represents the tall while Ketu represents the short persons.

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto will not be discussed in this article as firstly these are very slow moving planets and secondly these are hardly considered by astrologers inIndiafor making predictions.

Introduction to Indian astrology

Introduction to Indian astrology

God has produced a galaxy of eminent Astronomers and Astrologers around the world. Our ancient history reveals that our country stood first in the study of Astronomy and Astrology.

  1. Western or Modern Scholars and its Indian counterpart tend to underestimate the authenticity and Indian achievments not only in the field of Philosophy and Psychology but also in the so-called positive sciences of Jyotisha Sastra which forms an integral part as one.
  2. It is gratifying to note that in recent times, some of our scholars have begun to extricate in regard to the culture and scientific heritage of the Hindus.
  3. Scientists have disapproved Astrology as utterly false one. Many people have wrong notions about the scope and effectiveness of the Astrology. They believe it to be an exercise in futility, when everything is preordained, they say, then why waste of time and energy in knowing something which has got to happen and nothing can alter its course. True, but do not we make efforts to survive even if al are destined to die. Here, it would be better if we understand clearly what is meant by Luck, Effort and Destiny. Destiny is a certain, it cannot be changed or altered by human effort, whereas luck is that uncanny Phenomenon which ekes out the difficiency of efforts to make us get over destiny.

If efforts represent E, if luck represents – L and if destiny represents D, then E + L = D.

(i) That is, one’s destiny is preordained but to achieve it, one has to make efforts freely supported by better luck, you would get it with much less effort. Suppose one has to become an Engineer. That is his destiny. The effort part of the equation would make you to learn science subjects and the better phase of the life would see to it that one passes successfully with better marks to get admission in anEngineeringCollegeand qualify as an Engineer. In case one does not get support of his luck, one would have to do great efforts to get one’s due, which means one cannot stop his efforts.

(ii) Astrology only tells about the good or bad phase of life about the luck-part of the equation to enable to do efforts in accordance with the phase of life one is passing through.

(a) Astronomy – Brihat Jatak (Ganitha Sastras)

(b) Astrology – Phalita Rasayanam, Bhava Phalas, Phala Deepika.

(c) Natural science – 3 parts. Present, Past & Future.

(ii) Bhrigu Samhita: (Father of Hindu Astrology) gave precise predictions for every-second of human life. He worked very laboriously for many years to determine the planetary positions, judgement of longivity and their consequent effects on human beings for full duration of life believed by Astrological calculations to be of 120 years of life span. Since Astrology was developed as a science to study the effect of heavenly bodies on the human life, the planets have also been symbolised in confirmity with general human emotions as marvels of the World Astrology.

(iii) Parasara Samita : Maharashi Jaimini Sutras a pre-parasara authority.

The roots of Indian Astrology can be traced back to the dawn of history. According to Indian Astrology, your true self & personality is defined by the position of the planets, at the time and place of your birth. The present and future positions of the planets are compared with those of your birth chart to predict your future. This is the basis of Indian Astrology.

Hindu astronomy is called Jyotisha in Sanskrit. It means the Science of Light or of celestial Objects. Astrology called Phalita Jyotisha is a subsidiary branch of the same. Its relationship with astronomy is akin to that of technology to basic or pure sciences. It is a well developed system that has evolved over several centuries both in the East and in the West. It is believed that science of astrology originally originated inIndiaand has been practiced continuously for more than 8000 years.

The very fact that the astrologers chosen and involved in certain tests were able to predict very correctly the professions, important events and even diseases, of persons whose horoscopes only had been supplied to them, shows that astrology is not superstition and astrologers are not humbugs.

Little does one realize that the science of Indian astronomy was so much advanced thousands of years ago, that the word day is derived from the Sanskrit root (Dagdh) fire (the Sun), without the help of a telescope, using only our rishis (re-see) mindoscope, their consciousness, that could match even the Hubble telescope in space.

One cannot deny that moons gravitational force, which moves billions of gallons of water in the oceans producing high and low tides, could have some effect on the human systems, that are filled with water to the brim! Even our hard bones are 65 percent water ! Studies have shown how elective surgery, done on the new moon day vis-a-vis full moon day, results in marked difference in blood loss. So the cosmos, of which man is but a tiny part, will certainly have a say in his life.

The inaccuracies in predicting the future using astrology is the Achilles heel of astrology. But that is the curse even of science of the highest order, physics as well, not to speak of the Doctors predicting the unpredictable everyday.

No scientist  could predict the earthquakes inKobe,San Francisco, or nearer home inGujarat. The fault in predicting the future is not in physics or astrology but in us.

Our sciences will have to progress to understand the working of Nature better to predict the future accurately. Fault is not in astrology or physics but in our methods. Let us study astrology in greater depth and then accept or condemn it. Prejudging anything is unscientific.

Astrology has become more accessible now, and people no longer find its principles esoteric. For one thing, its easier to read about astrology in your mother tongue. Proficiency in classical languages is no longer a prerequisite. Accurate time keeping and calendars have brought it within the purview of the common man.

  • The Greeks cast horoscopes based on the time of birth giving details about the finance, family, fate and future of the individual. One such horoscope fromGreece, return on papyrus, about 2000 years old, is preserved at theBritishMuseum.
  • PharonicEgypttoo rated astrologers very highly. The pharaohs consulted astrologers to read the charts of the rival claimants to the throne, who were later put to death.
  • One of the prerequisites for claiming kingship inChinawas the knowledge of astrology. In 2513 C. Cheuni was elected king in this manner.
  • Even Alexander the Great took along his astrologer, Calisthenis, on all his campaigns. He incorporated the astrological traditions of whichever country they happen to attack.

Thus every nation is credited with the knowledge of astrology. However, despite its ancient glories and triumphs, the relentless march of scientific enquiry has turned the astrologer into a soothsayer. No school of astrology can be the last word of authority and no two astrologers have the same perceptions. It relies more on the law of probability. Moreover there is hardly any governing body that will separate the wheat from the chaff. No wonder that charlatans abound to cheat the people. All said and done, astrology does provide a certain amount of solace to people buffeted by the slings and arrows of an uncertain life. It gives them hope that their troubles will disappear and provides them confidence to carry on with life amidst all ills.

The records that exist inIndiatoday point clearly to a highly developed knowledge of astrology as far back as about 6,500 BC and actual manuscripts are still extant which were written about 3,700 BC. Some of the originals have been destroyed or lost but actual copies of these originals were made by later astrologers. These are to be found in the libraries of Maharajas and in the libraries of certain states inIndia. Actual, detailed records of astrological science are continuous from about 6,500 BC. One of the earliest authors of Vedic astrology, copies of whose work are still to be found, is Pita Maha who wrote a treatise on astrology called Pita Maha Siddhanta. He lived and wrote this book about 3,000 BC.

Five hundred years later, another author-astrologer named Vashishta wrote several books on astrology, astronomy and philosophy. His most important work, and one which was used as an authority by all subsequent writers on the subject, is Vashishta Siddhanta, but he wrote many other equally erudite and authoritative texts such as the Panch Siddhanta Kosha, Soorya Siddhanta, Nityananda, etc. Yet, Parasaras Hora Sashtra and Varahamiharas Brihat Jathaka, constitute the core Vedic Astrology Texts.

Tension or stress is a natural reaction of the events that take place in our day-to-day life. It can be a friend or a foe of a person. When under control, it can ignite creative power and productivity in a person and can make him or her prospective as well. But when out of control, it can take horrible toll on his or her mental, physical and emotional health and ;) relationships and this is this second form of it that prevails the world over -whether, in family or in the office, in park .or in travel in the present age of matter when everybody tries to grab every pleasure of life by this way or that.

In todays fast-paced world, we are experiencing more stress than ever before. A study ! conducted until recently shows that more than 45 percent people suffer adverse health effects from stress.

We all know that anxiety disorders cannot be stopped. We cant simply wish them away. In fact, they grow on most of us and eventually become chronic. So, the big question is what to do? Doctors and scientists are trying to find ways out. Researches are on but the situation is still far from satisfactory. But then there is hope as well in the form of different astrological paths and systems such as Ayurveda, Yoga, Pranic healing, acupressure, acupuncture and herbal medicines.

Where Ayurvedic medicine and Yoga can help us in keeping our body fit and healthy, consultancy by consultants of different streams can really help us in easing out the stress and tension people are going through these days. Astrology acts as a psycho treatment to a person going through a bad phase and feels very lone. Depression and increased tendencies to commit suicide can be effectively controlled if correct astro advice is given to a person in advance to prepare him to accept the upcoming event. One can prepare oneself mentally to accept the rough patch without much problems.
